Between Fate and Consciousness: An Interview with Black Silver



Following the release of “Sands of Time” in August, veteran MC and Sterling World Records executive producer Black Silver (The Navigator) returns to captivate our ears with a powerful new track: “It Was Written.” Produced by longtime collaborator DJ Obi, the single —released on September 5, 2025— is a dark and introspective dive into the concepts of fate, power, and the wisdom born from inner conflict.

“It Was Written” serves as a prelude to what will be An Evolved Experience, Black Silver’s upcoming album —a work that promises to explore the boundaries of consciousness and artistic evolution while maintaining the pulse of raw hip hop.

We spoke with the artist about the creative process behind his new material, his connection with legendary figures of the genre, and the artistic maturity that defines this new chapter in his career.

—Could you give us a hint of how It Was Written connects with the rest of the album An Evolved Experience?

Black Silver: Not to be too on the nose but, "An Evolved Experience" is exactly that. A culmination of my artistry to date. As most who are familiar with me know, I have an extensive catalog that has been graced by icons. I've travelled the globe, I've rocked stadiums and arenas, I get the invites to private affairs and gatherings that a large number of my underground associates don't get a chance to experience. Which has all led to my evolution.

 

—Is there a central concept or story that runs throughout the album?

Black Silver: Conceptually it's a lot more personal than I've been in the past. Traditionally as an artist I express via open minded concepts and eccentricity. But here I appear to be a lot more ground rooted and surface level.

 


—In the process of writing and recording An Evolved Experience, what was the most challenging part for you?

Black Silver: I guess it would be restraining from coming so far outside the box. I rarely draw inspiration from commonalities simply because there's so many more interesting concepts to engage with.

 

—You’ve been part of iconic collectives like Analog Brothers, Tha Likwit Crew, and Black Ice alongside Ice-T. What lessons did those experiences teach you, and which one do you feel shaped you most as an artist?

Black Silver: Actually, both Analog Brothers and Black Ice involved the OG Iceberg. But honestly as far as what contributed to shaping Black Silver the most was my connection to Kool Keith. That's where I recognized my core audience and realized I could sustain a career in Hip Hop.

 


—Looking back a bit, what memories come to mind from your early steps in music, and how do you compare them to the present moment you’re living?

Black Silver: I don't cling to the past much just because I've always lived in the now and looking towards the future. But one thing that pops in my mind often is the way we used to get together in different studios and be there for 12 to 48 hours just creating and building.

Conversamos con el artista sobre el proceso detrás de su nuevo material, su conexión con figuras legendarias del género y la madurez artística que define esta nueva etapa de su carrera.

 

—¿Podrías darnos una pista sobre cómo se conecta It Was Written con el resto del álbum An Evolved Experience?

Black Silver: No quiero ser demasiado obvio, pero An Evolved Experience es exactamente eso: una culminación de todo mi arte hasta el momento. Como muchos que me siguen saben, tengo un catálogo extenso en el que han participado verdaderos íconos. He viajado por el mundo, he tocado en estadios y arenas, recibo invitaciones a eventos y reuniones privadas a las que muchos de mis colegas del underground no tienen acceso. Todo eso ha contribuido a mi evolución.

 

—¿Hay un concepto o una historia central que recorra todo el álbum?

Black Silver: Conceptualmente es mucho más personal que mis trabajos anteriores. Tradicionalmente, como artista, suelo expresarme mediante ideas abiertas y cierta excentricidad. Pero aquí me muestro más terrenal, más conectado con la superficie.

 

—Durante el proceso de escritura y grabación de An Evolved Experience, ¿cuál fue la parte más desafiante para ti?

Black Silver: Probablemente contenerme y no irme demasiado “fuera de la caja”. Rara vez me inspiro en lo común, simplemente porque hay conceptos mucho más interesantes con los que involucrarse.

 

—Has sido parte de colectivos icónicos como Analog Brothers, Tha Likwit Crew y Black Ice junto a Ice-T. ¿Qué te enseñaron esas experiencias y cuál crees que te marcó más como artista?

Black Silver: En realidad, tanto Analog Brothers como Black Ice involucraban al OG Iceberg. Pero, sinceramente, lo que más influyó en la formación de Black Silver fue mi conexión con Kool Keith. Ahí fue donde reconocí a mi público esencial y comprendí que podía sostener una carrera dentro del hip hop.

 

—Mirando hacia atrás, ¿qué recuerdos te vienen a la mente de tus primeros pasos en la música, y cómo comparas esa época con el presente que estás viviendo?

Black Silver: No me aferro demasiado al pasado, porque siempre he vivido en el presente y mirando hacia el futuro. Pero algo que me viene a la mente a menudo es cómo solíamos reunirnos en distintos estudios y pasar de 12 a 48 horas seguidas creando y construyendo juntos.
