The Miner's Son by Ettecon is a bridge between the working-class memory of 1984 and the
rebellious spirit that defined 1980s rock. Directed and written by Juliette
Short, with music composed by Kevin Short, the film centers on Clay, a young
man from a mining community in the UK during the 1984 miners’ strike. Unlike
his father, who wants him to follow in his footsteps in the mines, Clay is
drawn to music and pursues success with his rock band—only to become entangled
in the ambition and deceit of a ruthless producer. The film explores the
tension between tradition and new aspirations within a community on the brink
of economic collapse.
Ettecon, an
independent production company founded by the husband-and-wife team Kevin and
Juliette Short, brought together a group of longtime friends and seasoned
musicians to bring to life Black Diamond, the fictional band at the heart of
the story.
Musically,
the project delivers an album that intertwines punk energy with the NWOBHM (New
Wave of British Heavy Metal) sound and the melodic artistry of the great rock
bands of the 1980s.
The film
takes place during the industrial conflicts of 1984. What drew you to that historical
Period?
I was a son of a coal miner, and lived on the south east coast of England where there was a big coal field and mining community. But I was also a musician and didn’t want to go into that industry especially after it was torn apart after such a bitter dispute. It was a bygone era, and very different to today’s world.
How
important was the spirit of 1980s British rock in shaping the sound?
The music of the early 1980's, especially Punk, and the NWOBHM sound has stuck with me and been very influential on what we write musically as I lived through it. As well as a turbulent time it was also very exciting. Myself and Juliette my wife who is the film’s Director and co-writer of The Miner’s son movie are very nostalgic about the 1980’s.
What was
the process like of writing the lyrics from the perspective of the film’s characters?
Juliette Short was the lyricist, when writing the screenplay to the movie I would go to her and explain a scene with the relevant characters and she would put a song together incorporating that scene or the character for example Mr Hot Shot is about the Antagonist {who was a real person} Derry Knight. So, most of the tracks on the album that we did write about are personal to a character in the film.
How did
the band’s lineup with Kevin, Juliette, Jamie, Carl, and Tony come together?
The band members had all previously known each other from decades of being in other bands together prior to forming Ettecon. Juliette joined the fold as song writer, and with myself as composer worked very well together as a unit.
Is there
any particular studio anecdote you especially remember?
You are never too old to fulfill your dreams, truly believe in what you are doing with confidence and never give up or be defeated.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de escribir las letras desde la
perspectiva de los personajes del film?
Juliette Short fue la letrista. Mientras escribía el guion de la película, yo iba hacia ella y le explicaba una escena con los personajes correspondientes, y ella componía una canción que incorporaba esa escena o ese personaje.
