years old, Joey P. stands out as one of the most compelling emerging voices in
contemporary R&B to come out of Chicago. His journey began rooted in metal
and rock, but over time he broadened his scope, sensitivity, and understanding
of music, ultimately shaping a distinctive sound within R&B and pop.
2025 marked
a pivotal moment in his career. The EP Missing in Action, made up of “Only One”
and “Wrong With You,” showcases a notable artistic maturity and was accompanied
by significant digital impact: a viral reel that surpassed 2.6 million views
and an unexpected milestone—reaching #1 on the iTunes R&B chart in Canada.
In this
interview, the artist reflects on his evolution, the influence of Chicago, and
the creative moment he is currently experiencing, as he begins to envision what
will be his next major step in 2026.
You
started out in metal and are now focused on R&B and Hip-Hop. What was that
transition process like?
I love this question. Starting in metal I didn’t sing while playing the guitar. I also didn’t play rhythm guitar. It wasn’t until a friend of mine named Natalia taught me a Taylor Swift song that I started exploring other aspects of music. I was pretty closed minded when I was younger and only listened to Rock and Metal. Pearl Jam was/is my all-time favorite. When I got older, I started branching out and listening to new genres which introduced me to artists like The Weeknd and Brent Faiyaz. When I first started making my own music, I was more interested in RnB than Rock. Ultimately, I try not to define myself with just one genre. I feel like my music is a mix of Rock and Pop and RnB because I’m a student of music, I try and learn from everything I listen to. One aspect of my music that stays true to my roots is anytime I produce a beat or help with production I always add guitar.
At just
24 years old, you already have an extensive discography. How do you view your
growth when you look back?
I made a promise to myself that I would release a project every year since I first started releasing music. My first project came out August 4th, 2021. My music reflects my life and releasing music every year allows me to capture my headspace at different moments in time. Each new song I make I feel more comfortable and confident in my ability to convey emotions through melodies and words. It’s always been such a blessing that with each new project I come out with people give it a chance. It truly means the world to me that I can release music for 5 years now and still have people willing to give it a listen.
Missing
in Action
plays with the idea of duality between light and darkness. Was that contrast
conceptual from the beginning?
The duality of light and dark is a theme I like to encapsulate in my music often. I actually released a project May 13th, 2023 called after/party that also represented light and dark. I feel like there is always two sides of every story, but also that there is beauty in both sides. It’s worth trying to understand both aspects of a situation, at least that’s how I feel.
Chicago
has a very diverse music scene. How has the city influenced your sound and your
songwriting?
Chicago is everything when it comes to who I am and what I represent. Everything I know was learned through the perspective of a Chicagoan. I didn’t realize how unique of an experience growing up in Chicago is until I went to college and met people from around the world. We have so many talented people here it’s unbelievable. All of my mentors come from Chicago. Just being in a city with such bold people inspired me to do what I want with my art.
Reaching #1 on the iTunes R&B chart in Canada is a major achievement. How did you experience that moment?
I absolutely couldn’t believe it. It was like I almost didn’t want to tell anyone in case I was dreaming. I looked on iTunes and saw my song Only One next to September by Earth, Wind & Fire. Life is truly unpredictable. The response I’ve been getting with my music recently has been unbelievable, truly a blessing. I’m fired up and ready to make more music.

Empezaste en el metal y hoy estás enfocado en el R&B
y el Hip-Hop. ¿Cómo fue ese proceso de transición?
Me encanta esta pregunta. Cuando empecé en el metal, no cantaba mientras tocaba la guitarra. Tampoco tocaba guitarra rítmica. Recién cuando una amiga mía llamada Natalia me enseñó una canción de Taylor Swift empecé a explorar otros aspectos de la música. Cuando era más joven era bastante cerrado y solo escuchaba rock y metal. Pearl Jam era —y sigue siendo— mi banda favorita de todos los tiempos. A medida que fui creciendo, empecé a abrirme y a escuchar nuevos géneros, lo que me llevó a descubrir artistas como The Weeknd y Brent Faiyaz. Cuando comencé a hacer mi propia música, me interesaba más el R&B que el rock. En definitiva, trato de no definirme por un solo género. Siento que mi música es una mezcla de rock, pop y R&B, porque soy un estudiante de la música y trato de aprender de todo lo que escucho. Un aspecto de mi música que se mantiene fiel a mis raíces es que cada vez que produzco un beat o colaboro en la producción, siempre agrego guitarras.
Con solo 24 años, ya tenés una discografía extensa. ¿Cómo
ves tu crecimiento cuando mirás hacia atrás?
Me hice la promesa de lanzar un proyecto cada año desde que empecé a publicar música. Mi primer proyecto salió el 4 de agosto de 2021. Mi música refleja mi vida, y lanzar música todos los años me permite capturar mi estado mental en distintos momentos del tiempo. Con cada nueva canción que hago me siento más cómodo y confiado en mi capacidad para transmitir emociones a través de melodías y palabras. Siempre ha sido una bendición que, con cada nuevo proyecto que lanzo, la gente le dé una oportunidad. Realmente significa el mundo para mí poder sacar música durante cinco años y que todavía haya personas dispuestas a escucharla.
Missing in Action juega con la idea de dualidad
entre luz y oscuridad. ¿Ese contraste fue conceptual desde el inicio?
La dualidad entre la luz y la oscuridad es un tema que me gusta encapsular con frecuencia en mi música. De hecho, lancé un proyecto el 13 de mayo de 2023 llamado after/party que también representaba la luz y la oscuridad. Siento que siempre hay dos lados en cada historia, pero también que hay belleza en ambos. Vale la pena intentar comprender los dos aspectos de una situación, al menos así lo veo yo.
Chicago tiene una escena musical muy diversa. ¿De qué
manera la ciudad influyó en tu sonido y en tu forma de escribir?
Chicago lo es todo cuando se trata de quién soy y de lo que represento. Todo lo que sé lo aprendí desde la perspectiva de alguien de Chicago. No me di cuenta de lo única que es la experiencia de crecer en Chicago hasta que fui a la universidad y conocí gente de todo el mundo. Acá hay tantísimo talento que es increíble. Todos mis mentores son de Chicago. El simple hecho de vivir en una ciudad con personas tan fuertes y decididas me inspiró a hacer lo que quiero con mi arte.
Alcanzar el puesto #1 en el chart de R&B de iTunes en
Canadá es un logro enorme. ¿Cómo viviste ese momento?
Realmente no lo podía creer. Era como si no quisiera decírselo a nadie por miedo a estar soñando. Entré a iTunes y vi mi canción Only One al lado de September de Earth, Wind & Fire. La vida es verdaderamente impredecible. La respuesta que estoy recibiendo con mi música últimamente ha sido increíble, una verdadera bendición. Estoy lleno de energía y listo para hacer más música.
