Sometimes, new beginnings don’t come at
twenty, nor under the spotlight. Sometimes, they arrive at forty, with a guitar
as a Christmas gift and the crackling of a fireplace in the background. That’s
how Morgenrøde was born—the musical project of Danish
artist Jens Christian Haar, a family man from the northern coast of Løkken who
decided to make an old dream come true: to become a musician on his own terms.
With a fully DIY approach and an artistic philosophy rooted in autonomy and
authenticity, Haar has built a sound universe as egocentric as it is
eccentric—where art is made for art’s sake, and every sunrise symbolizes a new
chance.
His latest single, Eudaimonia,
is proof of that: a raw burst of freedom that encapsulates the rebellious
spirit defining his entire project. In this exclusive interview with Revista Soundloop, Jens Christian Haar reflects on the
origins of his alias, his creative process, and the importance of making art
without filters or compromises.
Why did you choose the name Morgenrøde? What
does “the red blush of the sky at dawn” symbolize for you?
Well, to be honest, originally, I was deeply inspired by the work ‘Morgenröte’ written by Friedrich Nietzsche – a German philosopher. Nietzsche is one of my all-time biggest inspirations. The term stuck with me. The term so beautifully encapsulates the significance of ‘new beginnings’, and also the importance of understanding that each single day we wake up we are given the blessing and promise of yet another day – a new beginning. The red blush of the sky as the morning begins is the perfect metaphor for new beginnings. New chances. To start afresh. I myself am doing precisely this – beginning anew – with Morgenrøde. I always wanted to create freely. To express myself creatively. I have found my creative outlet; this egocentric and eccentric universe known as Morgenrøde.
You describe your music as an egocentric and
eccentric universe. What does that mean in creative terms?
Well, firstly, Morgenrøde is rather egocentric in nature, in the sense that it is ‘by me, for me’. I do not seek to please anyone. Do not attempt to spark an algorithm and explode across the globe. I create what I like myself, how I like myself – with no other audience in mind than myself. While I do ‘put it out there’, and I sincerely hope people enjoy my music, I do not have other people in mind during the creative process. Now, granted that Morgenrøde is so egocentric, and I myself tend to be somewhat eccentric, the eccentricity comes through rather automatically.
How important is it to you that the whole
process – composition, recording, artwork – is done by yourself?
It is of utmost importance. I have considered doing collaborations, and it is highly likely that this will happen sometime in the future. I do not mind, in any way, collaborating. But any work bearing only the ‘Morgenrøde’ name will necessarily be my own private creation in every aspect. I want to create freely as I please. Any “but maybe you should do this” or “I like it better when…” could potentially compromise the authenticity I try to put into it. Morgenrøde is not about polished surfaces. Not about easy-listening or a wide market of listeners. It is about the creation of art for the sake of art itself.
You talk about making art “for art’s sake.”.
How do you see the relationship between art, the market, and authenticity?
To me ‘art’ is all about free creative expression. Now, there are definitely many variations of art – and definitions hereof – but to me the truest kind of art is about this free creative expression. As soon as you have a potential market in mind, as you create, I feel that some of the freedom and pure expression may be somewhat hindered. It becomes more like a ‘production’ – a creation ‘ordered’ by someone else. Of course, you can still be creative and surely you can do so freely in many ways. I feel, however, that in my case – striving towards the purest self-expressive freedom as I create – any thoughts toward a market, any thoughts towards other people’s wishes or inclinations, will potentially obscure some of my creative freedom. Art for the sake of art, to me, is about creating just for the sake of creating. Unhindered. Unbiased. Self-expressively. Authentic.
Are you already working on new material? What
does the future hold for Morgenrøde?
I have a single out just now – Tit tak – and have two more singles in scope for the near future (Foxy and Romkugler & solkin). Even more importantly to me, however, is the fact that I will be releasing work on vinyl this summer. To me this is a huge milestone. I have a somewhat extensive vinyl collection myself and have always had this silent dream of having my own work on vinyl. Furthermore, I am actually working on two other albums simultaneously. I do not have all the songs ready, but I have some concepts I want to bring to life and several of the songs are already written – just not recorded yet. In other words, there are plenty more to come in the future from Morgenrøde.

¿Por qué elegiste el nombre
Morgenrøde? ¿Qué simboliza para ti “el rubor rojo del cielo al amanecer”?
Bueno, para ser honesto, originalmente me inspiré profundamente en la obra Morgenröte escrita por Friedrich Nietzsche, un filósofo alemán. Nietzsche es una de mis mayores inspiraciones de todos los tiempos. El término se quedó conmigo. Expresa de forma muy hermosa la importancia de los “nuevos comienzos” y también el hecho de que cada día que despertamos recibimos la bendición y la promesa de un nuevo día: un nuevo comienzo. El rubor rojo del cielo al comenzar la mañana es la metáfora perfecta de los nuevos inicios. Nuevas oportunidades. Para empezar de nuevo. Yo mismo estoy haciendo precisamente eso: comenzando de nuevo con Morgenrøde. Siempre quise crear con libertad. Expresarme creativamente. He encontrado mi vía de escape creativa: este universo egocéntrico y excéntrico conocido como Morgenrøde.
Describís tu música como un
universo egocéntrico y excéntrico. ¿Qué significa eso en términos creativos?
Bueno, en primer lugar, Morgenrøde es bastante egocéntrico por naturaleza, en el sentido de que es “hecho por mí, para mí”. No busco agradar a nadie. No intento activar un algoritmo ni hacerme viral. Creo lo que me gusta a mí, como me gusta a mí, sin pensar en otro público que no sea yo mismo. Si bien sí “lo publico”, y sinceramente espero que a la gente le guste mi música, no tengo en mente a otras personas durante el proceso creativo. Ahora bien, dado que Morgenrøde es tan egocéntrico, y que yo mismo tiendo a ser algo excéntrico, la excentricidad se manifiesta casi automáticamente.
¿Qué tan importante es para
vos que todo el proceso —composición, grabación, arte— lo hagas vos mismo?
Es de suma importancia. He considerado hacer colaboraciones, y es muy probable que eso ocurra en algún momento del futuro. No tengo ningún problema en colaborar. Pero cualquier obra que lleve solamente el nombre de Morgenrøde será necesariamente una creación privada y personal en todos sus aspectos. Quiero crear con libertad, como me plazca. Cualquier “pero tal vez deberías hacer esto” o “a mí me gusta más cuando…” podría poner en riesgo la autenticidad que intento plasmar. Morgenrøde no trata de superficies pulidas. No trata de música fácil de escuchar ni de llegar a un público amplio. Se trata de crear arte por el arte mismo.
Hablás de hacer arte “por el
arte mismo”. ¿Cómo ves la relación entre el arte, el mercado y la autenticidad?
Para mí, el arte se trata ante todo de la libre expresión creativa. Claro que hay muchas variantes y definiciones de arte, pero para mí, la forma más auténtica de arte es esa libre expresión creativa. En cuanto uno tiene en mente un mercado potencial mientras crea, siento que parte de esa libertad y expresión pura se ve algo limitada. Se convierte más en una “producción”, en una creación “encargada” por alguien más. Por supuesto, uno puede seguir siendo creativo, y hacerlo de forma libre en muchos aspectos. Pero siento que, en mi caso —al aspirar a la libertad de expresión más pura posible—, cualquier pensamiento dirigido al mercado, o a los deseos o inclinaciones de otras personas, puede nublar mi libertad creativa. El arte por el arte mismo, para mí, es crear solo por el hecho de crear. Sin restricciones. Sin sesgos. De forma autoexpresiva. Auténtica.
¿Ya estás trabajando en nuevo
material? ¿Qué le espera a Morgenrøde en el futuro?
Acabo de lanzar un sencillo —Tit tak— y tengo dos más en camino para un futuro cercano (Foxy y Romkugler & solkin). Pero aún más importante para mí es que este verano voy a lanzar música en vinilo. Para mí, eso es un gran hito. Tengo una colección bastante extensa de vinilos, y siempre tuve el sueño silencioso de tener mi propia obra en ese formato. Además, estoy trabajando en dos álbumes más al mismo tiempo. No tengo todas las canciones listas, pero sí tengo algunos conceptos que quiero llevar a la vida y varias canciones ya están escritas, aunque aún no grabadas. En otras palabras, hay mucho más por venir en el futuro de Morgenrøde.
