From London and Queens, two artists with solid backgrounds in the underground scene come together to create a track that goes beyond just music. “The Call” is, as they define it, a spiritual howl — a connection between musicians blessed with a gift that doesn’t follow market rules, but rather an inner need to create.

In this interview, producer and DJ Big O —whose work spans from jazz-hop to lo-fi— and MC L.O.U., known for his sharp and thoughtful lyrical style, share how this project was born, what sets it apart from anything they’ve done before, and how their personal journeys —shaped by travel, key collaborations, and artistic growth— converge in this powerful single.

What story or concept is behind “The Call?” How did the original idea come about?

L.O.U.: “The Call” is a record about artists that are truly talented at their craft. Us becoming one with the music. “The Call” is a representation of artists that are truly blessed by God with a musical gift and “The Call” is how we communicate with each other by spirituality howling at the moon through the music.

What sets “The Call” apart from your previous releases?

L.O.U.: “The Call” is the first record I’ve ever done with this kind of concept. I’m always thinking of new concepts to use for a record or album and this one here is the first of its kind. I’ve never went with a concept with us as musician’s communicating with each other by spiritually howling at the moon through the music until I put this record out.

What was it like working with artists like Fashawn or Skyzoo?

L.O.U.: I appreciate working with artists like Fashawn and Skyzoo and being able to keep up with them on a record. Makes me feel like I belong. I’m always open to working with other talented MC’s.
Big O: Working with those guys were special and I definitely plan on working with Skyzoo again in the future. Working with Fashawn was incredible though and it still feels unreal because I still remember listening to him back in my college days. From listening to him in college and developing a nice working relationship with him is still surreal.

What was the most challenging part of the production process?

Big O: The challenging part about the production process this go around was getting a different sound to pop with this particular record. I’ve never made a beat like this before and I wanted it to sound as sophisticated and classy as possible. That’s why I chose to make a beat that was jazz, funk & hip hop inspired.

You've traveled a lot—how has living in different cities influenced you musically and personally?

Big O: Each place that I’ve lived has influenced my music in some way. Whether it was me living in the South and making trap music to living in Germany making Lofi. These locations have shaped my personal and musical abilities giving me a crazy arsenal of styles to make some of my greatest songs.

¿Qué historia o concepto hay detrás de “The Call”? ¿Cómo surgió la idea original?

L.O.U.: “The Call” es un tema sobre artistas que realmente son talentosos en su arte. Nosotros volviéndonos uno con la música. “The Call” representa a artistas que han sido verdaderamente bendecidos por Dios con un don musical, y es la forma en que nos comunicamos espiritualmente entre nosotros, aullando a la luna a través de la música.

 

¿Qué diferencia a “The Call” de tus lanzamientos anteriores?

L.O.U.: “The Call” es el primer tema que hago con este tipo de concepto. Siempre estoy pensando en nuevas ideas para un tema o un álbum, y esta es la primera de su tipo. Nunca había trabajado con un concepto en el que nosotros, como músicos, nos comunicamos espiritualmente aullando a la luna a través de la música hasta que lancé este tema.

 

¿Cómo fue trabajar con artistas como Fashawn o Skyzoo?

L.O.U.: Aprecio mucho haber trabajado con artistas como Fashawn y Skyzoo, y haber podido estar a su nivel en un tema. Me hace sentir que pertenezco. Siempre estoy abierto a colaborar con otros MC talentosos.

Big O: Trabajar con esos tipos fue especial, y definitivamente planeo volver a trabajar con Skyzoo en el futuro. Pero trabajar con Fashawn fue increíble, aún se siente irreal porque recuerdo haberlo escuchado en mis días de universidad. Pasar de escucharlo en esa época a tener una buena relación de trabajo con él todavía me parece surrealista.

 

¿Qué fue lo más desafiante del proceso de producción?

Big O: En esta ocasión, el desafío fue lograr que un sonido diferente funcionara en este tema en particular. Nunca había hecho un beat como este y quería que sonara lo más sofisticado y elegante posible. Por eso elegí hacer un beat con influencias de jazz, funk y hip hop.

 

Has viajado mucho—¿cómo te ha influido vivir en diferentes ciudades a nivel musical y personal?

Big O: Cada lugar en el que he vivido ha influido en mi música de alguna manera. Ya sea viviendo en el sur y haciendo trap, o en Alemania haciendo lofi. Estos lugares han moldeado tanto mi personalidad como mis habilidades musicales, dándome un arsenal increíble de estilos para crear algunas de mis mejores canciones.
