Austrian by birth and British at heart, Ferdinand Rennie lives on the west coast of Scotland and has a musical career spanning more than three decades. For years, Rennie has been captivating audiences with his powerful voice and emotional performances. He has starred in musicals such as Les Misérables, Elisabeth and Jesus Christ Superstar, sung for Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, and moved international audiences with songs like Hallelujah and Never Enough. Now, he talks to us about his career, his appearance on Britain’s Got Talent, and what it means to him to breathe new life into one of his most cherished songs.
What motivated you to re-record Someone to Remember Me after 15 years since the original version?
This song means a lot to me and when I recorded it back in 2010 I was just happy to sing and produce it, but never thought it would be one of my most popular songs with the fans all over the years… I was listening to it very often, performed it live many times and always thought it could do better with the whole production. During the new recording I was in tears, not because of me singing, :-) but because this song is so beautiful written and emotional and needs to be heard all over the world!
You began your career in the 1980s by participating in the pre-selection for Eurovision. What do you remember from that experience?
So much excitement! Back then I was very young, there weren’t any of this talent shows we have today, so being discovered and asked to perform a song for ESC entry was a dream come true! I still want to perform once for a country at the ESC :-)
You have performed in musicals such as Les Misérables, Elisabeth, and Jesus Christ Superstar. What did you take from those experiences that you apply today to your work as a pop singer?
To be part of the musical scene was a great time in my life, I learned so much from live performing —also to act and sing the same time on stage. It helped me understand, create and perform my own style in the pop crossover genre.
What was your experience like performing on Britain’s Got Talent in 2022?
A VERY INTERESTING ONE, as the whole show is staged and produced to entertain the viewers, the production just has one aim to entertain —mostly on costs of the contestants. I didn’t know that back then. Just experienced a „not so feel good“ Situation. Anyway, I am still proud of to have been chosen, and had the chance to reach millions of people, so my audience grew anyway. If someone would ask me If I would do it again,YES, but on my conditions… :-)
You have sung for Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco. What was it like to experience such a moment?
I really enjoyed it, and it was such an honor to perform in front of them, they told me that they really enjoyed me singing… so what else would you need.
You have performed iconic songs like Hallelujah and Never Enough. Which has been the most challenging and why?
Both of them as they are so different. HALLELUJAH was covered so many, many times, and I wanted to put my own stamp on it, to make it outstanding. NEVER ENOUGH, one of my lifetime favorites, I wanted to make an Uptempo version of it, as the original ballad version is a songwriting and production masterpiece!
You worked with Grammy winner Mikal Blue on Chase the Sun. How did that collaboration come about?
My partner was friends with his ex wife and so we met and the corporation started. Loved it!

¿Qué te motivó a volver a grabar Someone to Remember Me después de 15 años de la versión original?
Esta canción significa mucho para mí y, cuando la grabé en 2010, me hacía feliz cantarla y producirla, pero nunca pensé que se convertiría en una de las favoritas de mis fans a lo largo de los años. La escuchaba con frecuencia, la canté en vivo muchas veces y siempre pensé que podía brillar más con una producción renovada. Durante la nueva grabación me puse a llorar, no por escucharme cantar :-) sino porque la canción está tan bellamente escrita y es tan emotiva que merece ser escuchada en todo el mundo.
Comenzaste tu carrera en los años 80 participando en la preselección para Eurovisión. ¿Qué recuerdas de esa experiencia?
¡Fue muy emocionante! En aquel entonces yo era muy joven y no existían estos programas de talentos que tenemos hoy. Que me descubrieran y me pidieran interpretar un tema para la preselección de Eurovisión fue un sueño hecho realidad. Aún quiero representar a un país en Eurovisión algún día :-)
Has actuado en musicales como Les Misérables, Elisabeth y Jesus Christ Superstar. ¿Qué aprendiste de esas experiencias que aplicas hoy a tu trabajo como cantante pop?
Formar parte de la escena musical fue una gran etapa en mi vida. Aprendí muchísimo del directo, así como a actuar y cantar al mismo tiempo sobre el escenario. Me ayudó a desarrollar, entender y crear mi propio estilo dentro del género pop crossover.
¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en Britain’s Got Talent en 2022?
MUY INTERESANTE. Todo el programa está diseñado y producido para entretener a la audiencia, y su objetivo principal es eso: entretener, muchas veces a costa de los concursantes. En ese momento no lo sabía, simplemente viví una situación que no fue del todo agradable. Aun así, me siento orgulloso de haber sido seleccionado y de haber llegado a millones de personas, haciendo crecer mi público. Si me preguntas si lo haría otra vez… SÍ, pero bajo mis propias condiciones :-)
Has cantado para el príncipe Alberto y la princesa Charlene de Mónaco. ¿Qué supuso para ti vivir ese momento?
Lo disfruté muchísimo y fue un honor actuar para ellos. Me dijeron que realmente les había gustado mi interpretación… ¿qué más podría pedir?
Has interpretado temas icónicos como Hallelujah y Never Enough. ¿Cuál ha sido el más difícil y por qué?
Ambos, ya que son muy diferentes. Hallelujah ha sido versionada miles de veces y quería dejarle mi propio sello para que destacara. Never Enough es una de mis favoritas de toda la vida y quise hacer una versión uptempo, ya que la original en forma de balada es una obra maestra en composición y producción.
Trabajaste con el ganador del Grammy Mikal Blue en Chase the Sun. ¿Cómo surgió esa colaboración?
Mi pareja era amiga de su exesposa, así que nos conocimos y comenzó la colaboración. ¡Me encantó!
