In Humbug,
the song comes from a mix of disillusionment with dating apps and the spark of
meeting someone real… how did that moment of inspiration for the lyrics come
about?
I was in the studio for a solo session six-hour slot when I got in a conversation with a girl, I had a crush on. I couldn’t communicate how I felt and was terrified of rejection. A moment came where I knew there was no chance and while stuffing up a pentatonic scale the riff came to me and the song just poured out. It was finished in 90 seconds, and I just sat in amazement for six hours wondering how I came up with such a good song so quickly.
Many of
your songs are rooted in a specific female figure. What is it about those
experiences or people that compels you to turn them into music?
The first album is a timeline of my life over 30 years, but I find the best songs came from pain and relationships. Unfortunately, I have never written a ballad I guess I focus on the negative and pain. Also, my doctor has told me I’m a romantic and looking for some unattainable dream love.
Do you
see these women more as muses in your creative process or as mirrors of what
you were going through at the time?
Mirrors! Nothing hurts more than saying goodbye to a beautiful woman.
Do you
feel your songs are also a way of paying tribute to the women who have been
part of your life?
That is what I was trying to achieve with the songs “you” and “Jody”. Any connection with a woman feels special to me.
In your
writing process, how do you distinguish a truly good idea from a “normal” one?
Do you prefer to always finish what you start, or do you tend to leave ideas
behind along the way?
The best songs come out flowing strong and are finished quickly. But some like “Jody” take 30 years to finish. I have hundreds of song ideas where all I have is a title and a few rhymes. Sometimes I feel I’d be better off writing and finishing some songs in a different head space. John Lennon said to finish your songs straight away as it’s easier, but I must disagree with the great man! Lol.
Is there
a dream you still haven’t fulfilled as a musician?
I want to do a tour of Australia, uk and Ireland and the USA. It’s my dream to play rod laver arena, corner hotel l, the tote and the mcg in my hometown Melbourne over a long career.

Estaba en el estudio para una sesión en solitario de seis horas cuando empecé a conversar con una chica que me gustaba. No podía comunicar lo que sentía y me aterraba el rechazo. Hubo un momento en que supe que no había ninguna posibilidad y, mientras arruinaba una escala pentatónica, me vino el riff y la canción simplemente fluyó. Se terminó en 90 segundos y luego pasé seis horas sentado, maravillado de cómo había compuesto una canción tan buena tan rápido.
Muchas de tus canciones están ligadas a una figura
femenina específica. ¿Qué es lo que tienen esas experiencias o personas que te
impulsa a convertirlas en música?
El primer álbum es una línea de tiempo de mi vida durante 30 años, pero descubrí que las mejores canciones surgieron del dolor y de las relaciones. Lamentablemente, nunca he escrito una balada; supongo que me concentro en lo negativo y en el dolor. Además, mi médico me ha dicho que soy un romántico y que busco un amor soñado inalcanzable.
¿Ves a esas mujeres más como musas en tu proceso creativo
o como espejos de lo que estabas viviendo en ese momento?
¡Espejos! Nada duele más que decir adiós a una mujer hermosa.
¿Sientes que tus canciones son también una forma de
rendir tributo a las mujeres que han formado parte de tu vida?
Eso es lo que intentaba lograr con las canciones You y Jody. Cualquier conexión con una mujer me resulta especial.
En tu proceso de escritura, ¿cómo distingues una idea
realmente buena de una “normal”? ¿Prefieres terminar siempre lo que empiezas o
tiendes a dejar ideas en el camino?
Las mejores canciones fluyen con fuerza y se terminan rápido. Pero algunas, como Jody, tardan 30 años en completarse. Tengo cientos de ideas de canciones en las que solo hay un título y unas rimas. A veces siento que sería mejor escribir y terminar algunas canciones en un estado mental diferente. John Lennon dijo que había que terminar las canciones de inmediato porque era más fácil, pero ¡debo estar en desacuerdo con el gran hombre! Jaja.
¿Hay un sueño que aún no hayas cumplido como músico?
Quiero hacer una gira por Australia, Reino Unido, Irlanda y Estados Unidos. Mi sueño es tocar en el Rod Laver Arena, el Corner Hotel, el The Tote y el MCG en mi ciudad natal, Melbourne, a lo largo de una larga carrera.
