Jason McKee
began writing songs in his teenage years, but it wasn’t until 2025 that he
decided to share his music with the world. After taking a Pro Tools course at
RMIT, he met producer Simon Moro, who helped him shape Pines Salad. The album
was recorded in Melbourne and features contributions from notable musicians
such as Kit Riley (bass), James Ryan (guitar), and Peter Marin (drums). Pines
Salad brings together 14 songs that move between grunge and alternative rock.
Influences ranging from Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, and Pixies
to The Beatles and even The Beach Boys emerge naturally throughout the record.
In this
interview, we look back on his first connections with music, the origins of his
songs, the role songwriting plays in his life, and what lies ahead for ReeToxA.
How was
your first connection with music?
My papa had an amazing vinyl collection which I was obsessed with. Especially the beach boys, Beatles and Rolling Stones.
Do you
remember what was your first song that you played or learned on the guitar? Was
it your own or a cover?
The first song I learned on guitar was about a girl by nirvana.
Did music
help you better understand your personal processes?
Music helped me with everything! I’d be lost without music!
What
continues to motivate you to write songs today?
I can’t stop the songs; they keep popping in my head. If the songs stop coming, I’d be very sad.
Are
there topics that you still haven't decided to address?
I touch on subjects such as politics and suicide on the next album; it goes a lot deeper.
How are
the preparations going for the second album?
The second album has been mastered and is just getting final approval from my producer Simon Moro.
Do we
have a departure date?
It should be out in the next two weeks I’m so excited.

Jason McKee comenzó a escribir canciones en su adolescencia,

¿Cómo fue tu primer contacto con la música?
Mi papá tenía una colección de vinilos increíble, con la que yo estaba completamente obsesionado. Especialmente The Beach Boys, The Beatles y The Rolling Stones.
¿Recordás cuál fue la primera canción que tocaste o
aprendiste en la guitarra? ¿Era propia o un cover?
La primera canción que aprendí en la guitarra fue About a Girl de Nirvana.
¿La música te ayudó a entender mejor tus procesos
personales?
La música me ayudó con todo. ¡Estaría perdido sin la música!
¿Qué te sigue motivando a escribir canciones hoy?
No puedo detener las canciones, siguen apareciendo en mi cabeza. Si dejaran de venir, estaría muy triste.
¿Hay temas que todavía no te hayas animado a abordar?
En el próximo álbum toco temas como la política y el suicidio. Va mucho más profundo.
¿Cómo van los preparativos para el segundo álbum?
El segundo álbum ya está masterizado y solo falta la aprobación final de mi productor, Simon Moro.
¿Tenemos fecha de salida?
Debería salir en las próximas dos semanas. Estoy muy entusiasmado.
