Esteban¿Cómo surgió la idea de trabajar juntos? ¿Cómo fue el primer contacto?
Yo, Rob, amo la música dance y los remixes, así que estaba buscando a alguien que remezclara algo, lo que fuera. Tuve la suerte de estar charlando con Night Wolf y amablemente aceptó escuchar algunas canciones. Eligió Kickback y se puso a trabajar. No tenía expectativas, no sabía qué iba a pasar, pero el contraste entre el original y el remix fue increíble.
Nos conocimos en un programa de radio con chat en vivo llamado XRP Radio y, después de escuchar algo de su música, creo que me ofrecí a remezclar algo que había oído, pero terminé recibiendo otra canción. Me enviaron todos los stems de Kickback y terminé usando… ¡las voces! Así que gracias a XRP Radio por permitir que nuestros caminos se cruzaran.
Esteban¿Qué les llamó la atención del trabajo del otro?
Escuchamos una amplia variedad de estilos, y creo que eso se refleja en el trabajo de cada uno. Probablemente no seamos una combinación obvia, pero eso es lo que hace que la colaboración sea intrigante y emocionante.
Ya pasó un tiempo desde que nos conocimos, pero hemos apoyado la música del otro desde entonces y estoy bastante seguro de que fui yo quien se acercó en el chat para proponer una colaboración.
Esteban¿Qué influencias comparten y cuáles los diferencian?
Escuchamos de todo y queremos cruzar géneros. Somos principalmente una banda orientada a guitarras, pero eso puede significar cualquier cosa. Crecimos escuchando rock de los 80 y la escena Madchester, pero no podés quedarte ahí.
No puedo hablar por The Fods, pero estoy seguro de que hay mucha música que ambos disfrutamos. Diría que mi playlist personal tiende más hacia lo oscuro, más bien hacia el lado depresivo del espectro. ¡La depresión hace mejor arte y todo eso!
Esteban¿Por qué eligieron “Kickback” como punto de partida?
Pensamos que, por su sonido inicial, era una buena candidata para un remix. No teníamos idea de lo minimalista que iba a terminar siendo. Kickback fue una de las primeras canciones que escribimos y una de las pocas que realmente tocamos en vivo.
No creo haberla elegido… ¿o sí? Creo que la respuesta correcta es que Kickback me eligió a mí. Pero, como punto de partida, fue uno excelente.
Esteban¿Qué elementos del tema original consideraron intocables?
Mmm… batería, bajo, guitarras… creo que había un piano en el tema original… sí, todo eso desapareció (risas). Empecé con los coros, reordenando y procesando la sección vocal, y mientras hacía eso empecé a escuchar un riff que se formaba alrededor de esas voces.
Nada era realmente intocable. No dimos CERO indicaciones y CERO ideas. Era simplemente “hacé lo tuyo y veremos si nos gusta”. ¡Y nos gusta!
Esteban¿Cómo fue el flujo de trabajo entre ustedes?
“Hola NW, acá tenés los stems, contanos cómo te va, nos vemos del otro lado, divertite.” Eso fue todo de nuestra parte.
Ellos pasaron tiempo ensayando, grabando, mezclando y recortando los stems individuales de cada parte de la canción, me lo enviaron por transferencia, ¡y yo me quedé solo con las voces y tiré todo ese trabajo duro a la basura! (risas). Después hice mi versión, la terminé y se la envié; les gustó, decidimos lanzarla.
Esteban¿Hubo un ida y vuelta constante o trabajaron en etapas más separadas?
Sí, este proyecto realmente no requirió ida y vuelta. Creo que en muchos casos, si otro artista o productor está remezclando tu canción, cuanto menos intervengas, mejor, porque esa es su interpretación de tu tema, ¿no?
Hizo un montón de cosas que no nos gustaron, así que le dijimos que se fuera a la m… (risas). La respuesta real es que no hubo ida y vuelta: le dimos una canción y nos devolvió algo divertido y diferente. ¡Todo bien!
Esteban¿Establecieron límites o todo estaba abierto a transformación?
Todo estaba abierto. Ni siquiera consideramos poner límites: para nosotros era una experiencia sumamente emocionante e interesante no saber qué iba a volver. Así que ahora tenemos un sonido medio trip-hop en nuestro currículum gracias a NW, y estamos encantados.
No hubo necesidad de poner límites, y creo que eso probablemente habría limitado el resultado final. Fue un proyecto divertido de hacer, y me gusta que confíen en mí para hacer lo mío y ver qué sale.
Esteban¿Cómo surgió la idea de incorporar elementos como la marimba y las cuerdas?
¿Qué es una marimba?
Simplemente se sintió como lo correcto de incorporar. Me transmitía una vibra de playa en una tarde soleada de domingo. La marimba siguiendo la línea de bajo le da ese impulso y la lleva hacia ese lugar “feliz” que estaba imaginando mientras la hacía.
Esteban¿Hubo referencias externas durante el proceso?
Diría que no. No teníamos ideas preconcebidas sobre lo que queríamos; simplemente nos interesaba ver qué pasaba.
Más allá de la canción original, no diría que hubo referencias. Intento no escuchar otra música ni siquiera ver televisión el día antes de saber que voy a crear algo, para no estar influenciado por nada al hacer mi propia música.
Esteban¿Cuál fue la parte más gratificante de trabajar juntos?
Escucharla y pensar: “wow, sigue siendo Kickback, pero en realidad no lo es. Y lo es. Y no lo es, todo al mismo tiempo”. También fue bueno exponernos a un estilo distinto de mezcla y presentación.
Creo que el hecho de haber conocido gente copada juntos y de estar construyendo un vínculo musical de cara al futuro, sabiendo que puede haber más colaboraciones por venir.
Esteban¿Qué desafíos surgieron durante el proceso?
Musicalmente: ninguno en absoluto. De ahora en más, imagino que seguir el ritmo del enfoque detallado y enérgico de NW en la promoción puede ser un desafío.

Esteban¿Sienten que “Kickback” marca un nuevo capítulo para ambos?
Kickback ha tenido varios nuevos capítulos a lo largo de los años, sigue evolucionando, lo cual es genial. Trabajar con NW + EscaVolt en general es un nuevo capítulo, y uno divertido.
Sin duda marca un nuevo capítulo con el lanzamiento de EscaVolt Records. También es un nuevo capítulo a nivel personal, ya que después de lanzar nueve álbumes con Flipper Music antes de formar este sello, tenía casi nulo control sobre cómo se promovía esa música al público. Ahora estoy encontrando mi propio camino como artista verdaderamente independiente.
Esteban¿Explorarían más reinterpretaciones o se moverían hacia material completamente nuevo?
Definitivamente estamos abiertos a hacer más en otras canciones. Así que serían nuevos temas los que reciban el “tratamiento NW”.
Con esta canción, no, ya está terminada, al menos para mí. Me gusta tratar la música como arte, como una pintura: el pintor, una vez que da las pinceladas finales y está satisfecho, no vuelve al día siguiente a cambiar cosas, ¿no?

Kickback, originally a song rooted in the band’s rock-driven style, undergoes a complete reconstruction in the hands of Night Wolf: a remix that reimagines it from the ground up. What began as a casual exchange on an online radio show evolved into a collaboration that challenges traditional remix conventions and highlights the value of letting go of control, allowing the work to find its own form.
Kickback (The Fods + Night Wolf) will be released on April 26 across all major digital platforms, and in this interview, they share all the details behind it.
EstebanHow did the idea of working together come about? How did your first contact happen?
I, Rob, love dance music and remixes, so I was looking for someone to remix something, anything. I was lucky that I was chatting to Night Wolf and he kindly agreed to take a look at a few songs. He chose kickback and went to work on it.
We met on a radio chat show called XRP Radio and after hearing some of their music I offered to remix something, but ended up getting a different song. They sent me all the stems and I ended up using… the vocals!
EstebanWhat caught your attention about each other’s work?
We listen to a wide range of styles, and I think that tells in each other's work. We are probably not obvious bedfellows, but that's what makes collaboration intriguing and exciting.
It was a while back now we met but we have supported each other’s music since and I am pretty sure it was me that approached them in the chat to ask about collaborating.
EstebanWhat influences do you share, and which ones set you apart?
We listen to everything, and we want to cross genre. We grew up listening to 80’s rock and the Madchester scene, but you can't stay stuck there.
I can’t speak for The Fods but I am sure there is most likely a lot of music we both enjoy. My own playlist is certainly more leaning towards darker more so depressing side of the scale. Depression makes better art and all that!
EstebanWhy did you choose “Kickback” as the starting point?
We thought, because of the initial sound it was a good candidate for remix. We had no idea how stripped back it would get. Kickback was one of the first songs we ever wrote.
I don’t think I chose this, or did I? I think the correct response is that Kickback chose me! But if there was any starting point this was a great one to start on.
EstebanWhich elements of the original track did you consider untouchable?
Hmmmmm… drums, bass, guitars, I think there is a piano in the original track? Yer all gone haha. I started with the backing vocal and rearranging the vocal section and I heard this riff forming around it.
None of it was untouchable really. We gave ZERO direction and ZERO ideas into it. It was just a case of You do You and we'll see if we like it. We like it!
EstebanWhat was the workflow like between you?
“Hey NW here’s some stems, let us know how you go, see you on the other side, have fun.” That was our bit.
They spent time rehearsing, recording, mixing and cutting up individual stems for the song parts, sent it to me, and I took the vocals only and threw all that hard work in the bin! I then made my version, finished it up and then sent it to them, they liked it, we decided to release it.
EstebanWas there a constant back-and-forth, or did you work in more separate stages?
Yes, this project did not really require back and forth, I think that The Fods just trusted the process and allowed me to get on with it.
He did tons of stuff we didn’t like so we told him to go f… the real answer was no there wasn’t; we gave him a track he gave us a fun and different one back. All good!
EstebanDid you set any boundaries, or was everything open to transformation?
Everything was open, we didn't even think setting boundaries should be a thing. So now we have a trip-hoppy sound on our CV courtesy of NW, we're delighted about it.
There was no need for boundary setting and I feel would most likely have stifled what was the end result, this was fun project to create.
EstebanHow did the idea of incorporating elements like marimba and strings come about?
What's a marimba?
It just felt like the right thing to bring in, it was giving me some beach vibes on a sunny sunday afternoon. The marimba following the bass line just picks it up and brings it to that happy place I was envisioning.
EstebanWere there any external references during the process?
I'd say not, we didn't have any pre-conceptions of what we wanted, we were just interested to see what happened.
Other than the original song, no I wouldn't say so. I am one to try and not listen to other music or even TV for the day before I know I am going to create something so I am not influenced by anything.
EstebanWhat was the most rewarding part of working together?
Hearing it - and going wow, it's still Kickback but it really isn't. And Is. And isn't, all at the same time.
I think the fact that we have met some cool people together and are building a bond in music for the future and to know that there are more collaborations maybe in the future together.
EstebanWhat challenges emerged during the process?
Musically: None whatsoever. From hereon I imagine keeping up with NW's detailed and energetic approach to promotion might challenge us!
Nothing, not one challenge! Mentally challenged? Maybe!
EstebanDo you feel that “Kickback” marks a new chapter for both of you?
Kickback has had a few new chapters over the years, it keeps evolving which is great. Working with NW + EscaVolt generally is a new chapter, and a fun one.
It is certainly the mark of a new chapter with the launch of EscaVolt Records. It is certainly a new chapter for me personally as I am now learning and finding my own way finally as a truly independent artist.
EstebanWould you explore more reinterpretations or move toward entirely new material?
Def open to more on other tracks, I think Kickback has had a fairly eventful enough journey so far. So, it would be new tracks getting the NW treatment.
Of this song, no we are done with this one, I like to treat music as art like a painting, the painter once corrected and applied the final strokes to the piece and is happy with it does not go back the next day and change stuff.
