We once
again welcome the Australian musician to our pages on the occasion of his new
single, “Love Keeps Burning Still”, one of the most emotional songs he has ever
written, inspired by his love story and subsequent separation from Lee, a
relationship that began at Munich's Oktoberfest.
In this new interview with our magazine, McKee reflects on memory, loss, and the way songs keep certain moments of life alive. He also tells us what it was like to work remotely with a European orchestra, recalls the intense creative process that gave birth to Soliloquy during the pandemic lockdowns, and shares some of the lessons that both love and the passing of time have taught him. Jason, how are you? It's great to have you back here. Let's talk about your new
single. “Love Keeps Burning Still” is one of your most personal ballads. Was it
difficult to revisit that period of your life while writing the lyrics?
The lyrics just flowed. I did not understand how we could not be friends but I was friends with other ex partners. But I guess some people move on in different ways.
What
memories of Lee resurfaced most strongly during the writing process?
Definitely that we promised to help each other and be friends for ever.
How do
you think your perspective on that relationship has changed over the years?
It just keeps fading. But the songs keep it alive. Some would say that’s torture but that’s the life of a song writer.
Do you
think the best love songs come from love itself or from loss?
I have only written a few love songs so I would say loss is easier.
What did
that relationship teach you that you still carry with you today?
That you can build your own family and love circle! There is hope.
You met
Lee at Munich's Oktoberfest. What memories do you still have of that encounter?
Wow! Very drunk hazy ones lol. It was a great week of partying and exploring Munich.
Did you
ever imagine that story would end up inspiring a song decades later?
I was planning to launch my band from Ireland back in 2003. But I followed Lee back to Brisbane. I did think there would be songs but happy ones.
What do
you think your 2003 self would say if he heard this song today?
You should of stayed in Ireland or gone to uk dude!
Do you
see this as a song of farewell or a song of celebration?
I think it’s me finally saying goodbye. I love the song.
What was
it like working remotely with a European orchestra?
The orchestra was so professional. Hearing the sounds in my head come to life was breathtaking. It was a magical experience.
Were
there moments when you doubted the project would actually come together?
I had full trust Simon Moro and I could pull it off but it was a scary process.
How did
Jessica McPherson-Riley become involved in the song?
Jess is kit Riley’s the bass players wife! She gave us a demo of her singing in my songs and we thought yep! She’s the one.
During
the pandemic, you were writing up to ten songs a day. What did a typical day
look like during that period?
I would wake up, have a smoke, feed Lucy my dog then go next door to get a croissant and capachjno. Then it would be guitar, keyboard during the light and lyrics and melodies by dark.
Do you
feel that Soliloquy would not have existed in the same way without those years
of lockdown and isolation?
Lockdown helped do such a project. It would have been so hard without the distractions of the city taken away.

Hola Jason, ¿cómo estás? Es genial tenerte nuevamente
aquí. Hablemos de tu nuevo single. “Love Keeps Burning Still” es una de tus
baladas más personales. ¿Fue difícil volver a esa etapa de tu vida mientras
escribías la letra?
La letra simplemente fluyó. No entendía cómo era posible que no pudiéramos seguir siendo amigos cuando sí soy amigo de otras ex parejas. Pero supongo que algunas personas siguen adelante de maneras diferentes.
¿Qué recuerdos de Lee reaparecieron con más fuerza
durante el proceso de escritura?
Definitivamente el hecho de que prometimos ayudarnos mutuamente y ser amigos para siempre.
¿Cómo creés que ha cambiado tu perspectiva sobre esa
relación con el paso de los años?
Simplemente se va desvaneciendo. Pero las canciones la mantienen viva. Algunos dirían que eso es una tortura, pero esa es la vida de un compositor.
¿Creés que las mejores canciones de amor nacen del amor
mismo o de la pérdida?
Solo he escrito unas pocas canciones de amor, así que diría que la pérdida es más fácil de convertir en canción.
¿Qué te enseñó esa relación que todavía llevás con vos
hoy?
Que uno puede construir su propia familia y su propio círculo de amor. ¡Hay esperanza!
Conociste a Lee en el Oktoberfest de Múnich. ¿Qué
recuerdos conservás de aquel encuentro?
¡Guau! Recuerdos muy borrosos por el alcohol, jajaja. Fue una semana fantástica de fiestas y de explorar Múnich.
¿Alguna vez imaginaste que esa historia terminaría
inspirando una canción décadas después?
En 2003 estaba planeando lanzar mi banda desde Irlanda. Pero seguí a Lee de regreso a Brisbane. Sí pensé que surgirían canciones de esa historia, pero imaginaba que serían canciones felices.
¿Qué pensás que diría tu versión de 2003 si escuchara
esta canción hoy?
“¡Deberías haberte quedado en Irlanda o haberte ido al Reino Unido, amigo!”
¿Considerás que esta es una canción de despedida o de
celebración?
Creo que es mi forma de decir adiós finalmente. Amo esta canción.
¿Cómo fue trabajar a distancia con una orquesta europea?
La orquesta fue extremadamente profesional. Escuchar cómo los sonidos que tenía en mi cabeza cobraban vida fue impresionante. Fue una experiencia mágica.
¿Hubo momentos en los que dudaste que el proyecto pudiera
concretarse?
Tenía plena confianza en que Simon Moro y yo podríamos lograrlo, pero fue un proceso que daba un poco de miedo.
¿Cómo surgió la participación de Jessica McPherson-Riley
en la canción?
Jess es la esposa de Kit Riley, nuestro bajista. Nos envió una demo cantando una de mis canciones y pensamos inmediatamente: “Sí, ella es la indicada”.
Durante la pandemia llegaste a escribir hasta diez
canciones por día. ¿Cómo era una jornada típica en esa época?
Me despertaba, fumaba un cigarrillo, alimentaba a Lucy, mi perra, y luego iba al negocio de al lado a comprar un croissant y un capuchino. Después pasaba el día entre la guitarra y el teclado mientras había luz, y cuando caía la noche me dedicaba a las letras y las melodías.
¿Sentís que Soliloquy no habría existido de la misma
manera sin aquellos años de aislamiento y confinamiento?
El confinamiento ayudó mucho a hacer posible un proyecto así. Habría sido muchísimo más difícil sin las distracciones de la ciudad.
