Hace apenas unos días, Jason McKee nos volvió a sorprender
con su nuevo single, "Demand Perfection", un rock contundente con una
mirada tan irónica como crítica sobre las relaciones de hoy.
Tuvimos el gusto de conversar con él nuevamente, pero en esta
oportunidad para conocer más detalles sobre este nuevo lanzamiento, el presente
de Reetoxa y los planes de la banda para sus próximos pasos. Con la síntesis y
el humor que lo caracterizan, McKee nos habla de inspiración, redes sociales,
romance, composición y del tercer álbum que ya comienza a tomar forma.
Hola, Jason, ¿cómo estás? ¡Qué bueno tenerte de nuevo con
nosotros en la Revista Soundloop! Acabás de lanzar una nueva canción y, como
muchas de tus composiciones, tiene una historia muy interesante detrás. ¿Podés
contarnos cómo surgió la idea de "Demand Perfection"?
Estoy bastante fuera de forma y estaba en la cinta del gimnasio, prácticamente muriéndome. Entonces se subió a la cinta de al lado un tipo fanfarrón, todo musculoso, que empezó a hablar de dinero, autos descapotables y de todas las mujeres jóvenes con las que había estado. Yo quería salir corriendo a mi casa, pero en ese momento la canción apareció en mi cabeza.
¿Anotaste la idea enseguida o la canción tomó forma más
tarde?
Corrí hasta mi casillero para grabar la idea lo más rápido posible. Pensé que era un temazo.
¿Tus mejores canciones suelen surgir así, de repente?
Algunas no. Por ejemplo, Alcohol 3, que forma parte del nuevo disco que estamos grabando ahora, me llevó tres años. Pero mis favoritas son las que aparecen de inmediato.
La canción habla del dinero como un filtro a la hora de
elegir pareja. ¿Creés que eso es más común hoy que hace veinte años?
Recuerdo que hace veinte años una cita podía ser comer fish and chips en la playa. Ahora parece que necesitás mostrar tu historial crediticio o una lista de tus bienes. Es bastante triste.
¿Pensás que las redes sociales cambiaron para bien o para
mal la forma en que nos comunicamos?
En mi opinión, para peor. Las redes sociales reemplazaron la comunicación con los amigos y la familia. Hoy en día, una actualización de estado en Facebook cuenta como si ya te hubieras puesto al día con alguien.
¿Sentís que las expectativas románticas se volvieron poco
realistas de alguna manera?
Sí, creo que el romance está muerto hoy en día. O quizás simplemente me estoy volviendo un viejo cínico.
¿Qué tan importante es observar a la gente cuando
escribís tus letras?
Estoy dispuesto a probar cualquier herramienta que sirva para escribir canciones.
Después de tantos años, ¿qué te sigue motivando a
escribir canciones?
¡Buena pregunta! Escribo canciones porque, si no lo hiciera, explotaría. Me da una alegría enorme.
Si alguien nunca escuchó a Reetoxa, ¿"Demand
Perfection" sería el mejor lugar para empezar?
Sí, creo que cualquier persona, desde un adolescente hasta alguien que ame la música del siglo XIX, puede encontrar algo que disfrutar en esta canción.
Van a tocar en el Reino Unido y Europa. ¿Qué expectativas
tenían y cómo se estaban preparando para esta gira?
Estaba a punto de salir a tocar, pero todo se retrasó por las negociaciones con un sello discográfico. Me muero de ganas de volver a tocar en vivo.
¿Qué pueden esperar los seguidores de Reetoxa en los
próximos meses?
Ya tenemos terminado aproximadamente el 75 % de nuestro tercer álbum. Todavía no sabemos si saldrá antes de Navidad o si esperaremos hasta febrero. Todo está un poco en el aire, pero es nuestro mejor trabajo hasta ahora y definitivamente va a valer la pena la espera.

Just a few
days ago, Jason McKee surprised us once again with his new single, "Demand
Perfection"—a powerful rock track that offers an ironic yet sharp critique
of modern relationships.
Hi
Jason, how are you? It's great to have you back with us at Soundloop Magazine!
You've just released a new song, and like so many of your tracks, it has an
interesting story behind it. Could you tell us how the idea for "Demand
Perfection" first came about?
I am quite unfit and I was on the treadmill at the gym nearly dying. This doiche bag bloke with huge muscles got in the treadmill next to me and started talking about money, convertible cars and all these young women he had been with. I wanted to run home but the song sprung into my head.
Did you
write the idea down straight away, or did the song come together later?
I run to my locker to record the song very quickly I thought it was a banger.
Do your
best songs often come to you like that, completely out of the blue?
Some like alcohol 3 on my new record recording right now took three years, but my favs are the ones that come straight away.
I remember 20 years ago dates could be fish n chips on the beach now you need your credit score or asset list it’s quite sad.
Do you
think social media has changed the way we communicate for better or for worse?
Social media has replaced communication with friends and family for the worse in my opinion, a Facebook status update counts as a catch up these days.
Do you
feel that romantic expectations have become unrealistic in some way?
Yes, I think romance is dead these days. Or maybe I’m getting cynical in my old age.
How
important is people-watching when you're writing your lyrics?
I’ll try any song writing tool available.
After
all these years, what still motivates you to keep writing songs?
Good question! I wrote songs because if I didn’t, I’d explode. It brings me so much joy.
If
someone has never listened to Reetoxa before, would "Demand
Perfection" be the best place to start?
Yeah, I think any age from teenager to 19th century music lovers could get something out of it.
You're
getting ready to play shows in the UK and Europe. What are your expectations,
and how are you preparing for this tour?
I was about to play shows but it’s been held up with label negotiations. I’m dying to play live.
What can
fans expect from Reetoxa over the coming months?
We are 3/4. Finished our third album and I’m not sure if it will be released before Christmas or wait untill feb! It’s up in the air but it’s our best work and will be worth the wait!
