On the
occasion of his new single Avocet Court (which we reviewed, and you can read it here), we had a chat with Australian artist Jason McKee, the mind behind
ReeToxA. A song he originally wrote back in 1995, it remained tucked away until
now, when it finally found its definitive form.
As always,
it’s a pleasure to have him back in our magazine. In this interview, he tells
us all about this new track.
What did
you feel the first time you listened to “Avocet Court” finished?
Avocet was a simple strummed guitar, but the musicians took it to another level. I felt really proud when I heard it, especially as it was written in 1995.
What
memories come to mind when you think about the time this song was born?
I was having a very hard time at school getting bullied and at home my family was falling apart. I felt so alone and desperately wanted to leave.
You felt
the need to go to Sydney... How did you imagine that city, or had you already
been there?
I was born in Nowra three hours south of Sydney in a small coastal town. I remember life being fun and simple back then. I felt my life had gotten worse when we moved to Melbourne. I love Melbourne now but running away to Sydney was my dream.
What was
life like in Carrum Downs? What made you feel different? What do you wish
someone had told you back then?
I wish I had someone to encourage me back then to follow my music dreams. I think I could have been successful. Carrum downs felt isolated with a slow bus service and no train. It felt like the middle of nowhere.
If you
had to gift “Avocet Court” to someone, who would you dedicate it to?
I dedicate it to anyone having a hard time in life with family, school or work.
What
would you say to the Jason who was about to get on that train to Sydney but
didn’t have the courage?
Move to the north side of Melbourne and follow your dreams.

Con motivo de su nuevo single, Avocet Court (al cual
le hicimos una reseña que se puede leer aquí), estuvimos charlando un rato con el
artista australiano, Jason McKee, que está al frente de ReeToxA. Una canción
que escribió originalmente en 1995, y que permaneció guardada hasta
ahora, cuando finalmente encontró su forma definitiva.
Como siempre, es un placer tenerlo de vuelta en nuestra
revista. En esta entrevista nos cuenta todo acerca de este nuevo lanzamiento.
¿Qué sentiste la primera vez que escuchaste “Avocet
Court” terminada?
Avocet era una guitarra sencilla tocada con acordes, pero los músicos la llevaron a otro nivel. Me sentí realmente orgulloso cuando la escuché, especialmente porque fue escrita en 1995.
¿Qué recuerdos te vienen a la mente cuando pensás en la
época en que nació esta canción?
Estaba pasando un momento muy difícil en la escuela, siendo acosado, y en casa mi familia se estaba desmoronando. Me sentía muy solo y deseaba con desesperación irme.
Sentías la necesidad de ir a Sídney... ¿cómo imaginabas
esa ciudad, o ya habías estado allí?
Nací en Nowra, a tres horas al sur de Sídney, en un pequeño pueblo costero. Recuerdo que la vida era divertida y simple en ese entonces. Sentí que mi vida empeoró cuando nos mudamos a Melbourne. Ahora amo Melbourne, pero huir a Sídney era mi sueño.
¿Cómo era la vida en Carrum Downs? ¿Qué te hacía sentir
diferente? ¿Qué te hubiese gustado que alguien te dijera en ese momento?
Ojalá hubiera tenido a alguien que me animara en ese entonces a seguir mi sueño musical. Creo que podría haber tenido éxito. Carrum Downs se sentía aislado, con un servicio de colectivos lento y sin tren. Se sentía como en medio de la nada.
Si tuvieras que regalarle “Avocet Court” a alguien, ¿a
quién se la dedicarías?
La dedico a cualquiera que esté pasando un momento difícil en la vida, ya sea con la familia, en la escuela o en el trabajo.
¿Qué le dirías al Jason que estaba a punto de subirse a
ese tren a Sídney pero no tuvo el coraje?
Mudate al norte de Melbourne y seguí tus sueños.
