Interview with Reetoxa: "Song writing is great for closure and processing feelings"

Continuing a tradition for the magazine, we once again speak with Jason Bill McKee—the Australian musician behind ReeToxA—to mark the release of his new single, "You Deserve Better Than Me," one of the compelling ballads from his second album, *Soliloquy*. Inspired by a date that never quite blossomed into a romance, the song captures the kind of encounter that leaves a lasting impression, even when fate leads us down a different path.

Hi, Jason. How are you? You’re a regular here at our magazine by now. We love having you here because you’re part of the family, and you’re also someone with so many interesting stories to tell. We really loved the new single, "You Deserve Better Than Me"—one of the ballads from your second album. What does this song mean to you?

The song is special to me as there is nothing worse than being used and we decided to part ways amicability. A great girl just not my girl.

 

The story stems from a Tinder date. What was it about the person you met that day that really caught your attention?

She was so kind and sweet. Anyone who shouts me a beer is a friend in my eyes.

 


 

Did you ever think about getting back in touch with them after writing the song?

She is a huge music fan I’d love her to hear it. I have lost her details though.

 

You mentioned that the idea first came to you in a dream. What was that dream like?

The dreams during the soliloquy sessions were so vivid, it was a song writers dream.

 

Does it happen often that dreams end up influencing your songwriting?

I often wake up in the middle of the night or morning and sing a song into my phone. I’m shocked at how some are good the next day!

 


Musically, Soliloquy is a really diverse album—there are pop songs, ballads, rock tracks, and even punk. Was that variety intentional, or did it just come together naturally?

It just flowed naturally. I can’t stick to one genre or style.

 

Were you influenced by any specific artists or albums when creating "You Deserve Better Than Me"?

Musically I let the band jam this one out! I was not sure what would best suit the melody and lyrics. They did a great job.

 

Many of your lyrics are based on real-life events, do you feel that songwriting also serves as a way to close personal chapters?

Song writing is great for closure and processing feelings. It’s like my own private therapist.

 


How is the search for musicians for live shows going? Is that still part of your plans?

Having trouble finding a guitarist as James is so good and intimidating! Hopefully play live soon.

 

How is work progressing on the third ReeToxA album? Is there a new song you’re particularly excited about?

The new album is amazing! I can’t wait for you to hear it. There is a great song about bees and another about getting drunk at the airport I’m sure you’ll love.

Como viene siendo costumbre en la revista, volvemos a conversar con Jason Bill McKee, el músico australiano detrás de ReeToxA, con motivo del lanzamiento de su nuevo single, "You Deserve Better Than Me", una de las baladas interesantes de su segundo disco, Soliloquy. Inspirada en una cita que nunca llegó a convertirse en una historia de amor, son de esos encuentros que dejan un recuerdo, aun cuando el destino toma otro camino.

Hola, Jason. ¿Cómo estás? Ya sos un habitué de nuestra revista. Nos encanta tenerte aquí porque ya sos parte de la familia y, además, siempre tenés historias muy interesantes para contar. Nos gustó muchísimo el nuevo single, "You Deserve Better Than Me", una de las baladas de tu segundo álbum. ¿Qué significa esta canción para vos?

La canción es muy especial para mí porque no hay nada peor que sentirse utilizado, y decidimos separarnos en buenos términos. Era una gran chica, simplemente no era mi chica.

 

La historia nace de una cita de Tinder. ¿Qué fue lo que más te llamó la atención de la persona que conociste ese día?

Era muy amable y muy dulce. Cualquiera que me invite una cerveza ya es un amigo para mí.

 

¿Alguna vez pensaste en volver a ponerte en contacto con ella después de escribir la canción?

Es una gran fan de la música y me encantaría que pudiera escucharla. Pero lamentablemente perdí su contacto.

 

Mencionaste que la idea apareció primero en un sueño. ¿Cómo era ese sueño?

Los sueños durante la etapa de composición de Soliloquy eran tan vívidos... eran el sueño de cualquier compositor.

 

¿Te ocurre seguido que los sueños terminan influyendo en tus composiciones?

Muy seguido. A menudo me despierto en mitad de la noche o por la mañana y canto una canción en el celular. Al día siguiente me sorprende descubrir que algunas realmente son buenas.

 

Musicalmente, Soliloquy es un álbum muy diverso: hay canciones pop, baladas, rock e incluso punk. ¿Esa variedad fue algo planeado o simplemente surgió de manera natural?

Surgió completamente de forma natural. No puedo limitarme a un solo género o estilo.

 

¿Hubo algún artista o álbum que haya influido especialmente en la creación de "You Deserve Better Than Me"?

Musicalmente dejé que la banda improvisara sobre esta canción. No estaba seguro de qué sonido acompañaría mejor la melodía y la letra. Hicieron un trabajo fantástico.

 

Muchas de tus letras están basadas en experiencias reales. ¿Sentís que componer también funciona como una forma de cerrar capítulos personales?

Componer es una excelente manera de cerrar etapas y procesar sentimientos. Es como tener mi propio terapeuta privado.

 

¿Cómo va la búsqueda de músicos para los shows en vivo? ¿Sigue siendo uno de tus planes?

Estoy teniendo dificultades para encontrar un guitarrista porque James es tan bueno que intimida un poco. Espero poder tocar en vivo muy pronto.

 

¿Cómo avanza el trabajo en el tercer álbum de ReeToxA? ¿Hay alguna canción nueva que te tenga especialmente entusiasmado?

¡El nuevo álbum es increíble! No puedo esperar a que lo escuches. Hay una gran canción sobre abejas y otra sobre emborracharse en el aeropuerto. Estoy seguro de que te van a encantar.
