REVISTA SOUNDLOOP | NUEVA ENTREVISTA
ReeToxA continues to unearth stories from *Soliloquy* with the release of “Bottle,” one of the oldest and most personal tracks on the album. Written by Jason McKee when he was just fifteen, the song remained unreleased for three decades until it finally found the production style he had always envisioned.
Hi Jason, it’s a pleasure to have you back in the magazine! “Bottle” was the fifth song you ever wrote, when you were just fifteen years old. How does it feel to finally see it released thirty years later?
It’s such a nice feeling. I have written thousands of songs but some were aching to get out of me.
Were there any parts of the song that you deliberately chose not to change in order to preserve the authenticity of that moment?
Lyrically we cut off half the second verse to get it to the chorus quicker but other wise it’s pretty much straight from the 90’s.
What was the first thing that came to mind when you listened to that composition again all those years later?
I thought about my friends are happy with kids and married. There’s a happy ending to the song.
Did you remember the song perfectly, or did you have to reconstruct parts of it?
I went through my old diaries but only found the first rough draft. I had to pad it out from memory a little bit but mostly I could remember it for some reason.
The story behind the song is fascinating. What do you remember about that night with Jody and Nicole?
I remember Jody and I being terrified for our friend. There were no mobiles back then and we did not know who could help. We had to join together to solve the problem.
Are you still in touch with any of the people who inspired the story?
I’m Facebook friends with Jody but have not seen Nicole since the early 2000’s. Maybe a school reunion is needed.
Were there any ideas from Simon Moro that surprised you during the recording process?
Simon chopping the second verse, but it really worked.
James Ryan transformed your original guitar ideas. What was it like working with him on this track?
I basically had to hum the guitar part to them but they are so talented they could play it straight away. I was in total shock. It was like they were crawling around in my head.
What moment from the recording sessions do you remember most fondly?
There was so many laughs and some alcohol breaks this second album for such a serious album. It was a lot more relaxed than the first album.
Do you think there’s still some of that teenage spirit left in the way you write songs today?
Yeah sound writing knows no age for me. I still write teenage punk songs sometimes. The new album we are about to record in a few weeks is so full of variety.

Are there other songs from that period that are still unreleased? Is there perhaps an even earlier composition than “Bottle” that you’d like to record someday?
On the next album there are four tracks from that era, 95 to 99! They have stood up well. Maybe 4th album it’s time to start a fresh.
As always, Jason, thank you very much for your time and for joining us once again. To wrap up the interview, what message would you like to leave for our readers and for those who are continuing to discover ReeToxA’s music?
New album being record July / August! Should be out before Christmas. It’s a party album you’ll love it! Thanks so much to you and your readers you have been there since the start!
Me dejó completamente sorprendido.
