Después de conversar con Jason McKee en distintas oportunidades, volvemos a encontrarnos con el líder de Reetoxa, esta vez a raíz de "Dancing With Lou".
El tema nació durante la pandemia, cuando McKee pasó buena parte de su tiempo escribiendo y escuchando música. El recuerdo de la primera vez que descubrió el trabajo solista de Lou Reed volvió a su cabeza y, casi de inmediato, terminó transformándose en una canción. Retrata cómo aquel descubrimiento, que ocurrió cuando tenía apenas quince años, amplió sus horizontes musicales y modificó para siempre su manera de componer.
En esta nueva conversación con la Revista Soundloop, Jason habla sobre aquella primera experiencia con The Blue Mask, la influencia de Reed en sus letras, el encuentro que tuvo años después con el propio Lou, el trabajo de Simon Moro y James en la producción, entre otras cosas. EstebanHola, Jason, ¿cómo estás? ¡Es genial tenerte nuevamente con nosotros en la Revista Soundloop! Siempre nos alegra volver a conversar con vos y, esta vez, llegás con un lanzamiento muy especial, "Dancing with Lou". La canción cuenta una historia muy personal sobre uno de los artistas que más influyeron en tu vida y en tu forma de componer. ¿Cuándo apareció por primera vez la idea de escribir "Dancing with Lou"?
Durante el COVID estaba obsesionado con escribir canciones y con la música. Vivía solo con un perro pequeño y, mientras escuchaba a Lou Reed, recordé la primera vez que escuché su material solista. Se convirtió en una canción inmediatamente.
Esteban¿Sentís que "Dancing with Lou" es más un homenaje o también una autobiografía musical?
Es un homenaje, con referencias a sus "$26", etc., pero también es la historia de mi vida expandiendo mis horizontes musicales más allá de los años 90.
EstebanTenías apenas quince años cuando escuchaste The Blue Mask por primera vez. ¿Qué recordás de aquel momento?
Recuerdo especialmente "Waves of Fear". Me voló la cabeza.
Esteban¿Qué fue lo primero que te llamó la atención de Lou Reed? ¿Qué tenía que lo diferenciaba de los artistas que escuchabas en 1995?
Me encantaron la producción cruda y las letras honestas. En ese momento ya había escrito unas 50 canciones y decidí que nunca volvería a censurarme.
Esteban¿Qué aprendiste de Reed a la hora de escribir canciones?
Dos acordes son suficientes y cualquier cosa puede convertirse en una canción.
Esteban¿Hubo temas que antes no te animabas a abordar y que después de descubrir a Reed comenzaste a incorporar en tus canciones?
Me costaba criticar a mi familia y a la escuela, pero eso cambió rápidamente, jaja.

Jason McKee — ReetoxaEstebanFinalmente tuviste la oportunidad de conocer a Lou Reed durante la gira de Ecstasy. ¿Cómo fue ese momento?
Estaba temblando muchísimo. Pude decirle que lo amaba y él me sostuvo el brazo para que pudiera mantenerlo firme y firmar mi póster. Recuerdo que rechazó los avances de algunas mujeres porque estaba casado. Tengo el póster enmarcado en casa.
Esteban¿Qué aportaron Simon Moro y James a la versión final de la canción esta vez?
Simon y James tomaron mi simple riff de blues y lo convirtieron en una bestia.
Esteban¿La canción quedó como la imaginabas originalmente? ¿Hubo algún elemento de la producción que te sorprendiera cuando escuchaste la mezcla terminada?
Yo pensaba que era un simple riff de blues, pero la banda se divirtió muchísimo improvisando sobre él.
EstebanDespués de treinta años escribiendo canciones, ¿sentís que finalmente estás haciendo la música que siempre quisiste hacer?
Sí, ¡sigo mejorando! No puedo esperar a que escuchen el tercer álbum.

After speaking with Jason McKee on several occasions, we catch up once again with the frontman of Reetoxa, this time following the release of "Dancing with Lou."
The track was born during the pandemic, when McKee spent much of his time writing songs and listening to music. The memory of the first time he discovered Lou Reed's solo work came back to him and, almost immediately, turned into a song. It tells the story of how that discovery, which happened when he was just fifteen years old, expanded his musical horizons and changed the way he approached songwriting forever.
In this new conversation with Soundloop Magazine, Jason talks about that first experience with The Blue Mask, Reed's influence on his lyrics, the opportunity he later had to meet Lou himself, the work of Simon Moro and James on the production, and much more. He also reveals that the band's third album continues to take shape and promises that there is still plenty more to come.
EstebanHi Jason, how are you? It's great to have you back with us at Soundloop Magazine! We're always happy to catch up with you, and this time you're joining us with a very special new release, "Dancing with Lou." The song tells a deeply personal story about one of the artists who had the greatest influence on your life and your songwriting. When did the idea for "Dancing with Lou" first come to you?
During covid I was obsessed with songwriting and music. I was living alone with a small dog and while listening to Lou reed I remembered the first time I heard his solo stuff. It turned into a song straight away.
EstebanDo you feel that "Dancing with Lou" is more of a tribute, or is it also a musical autobiography?
it's a tribute quoting his $26, etc., but it's also my life story of expanding music beyond the 90's.
EstebanYou were only fifteen when you first heard The Blue Mask. What do you remember about that moment?
I remember waves of fear song the most. It blew my mind.
EstebanWhat was the first thing that caught your attention about Lou Reed? What was it about him that set him apart from the artists you were listening to in 1995?
I loved the raw production and honest lyrics. I had written about 50 songs at the time and decided to never censor myself.
EstebanWhat did you learn from Reed when it came to songwriting?
Two chords is enough and anything can be a song.
EstebanWere there subjects you didn't feel comfortable writing about before discovering Reed, but that you later began exploring in your own songs?
I found it hard to criticize family and school but that soon changed lol.

Jason McKee — ReetoxaEstebanYou eventually had the chance to meet Lou Reed during the Ecstasy tour. What was that moment like?
I was shaking so hard and got to tell him I loved him and he held my arm straight so he could sign my poster. I remember him turning down women's advances as he was married. I have the poster framed at home.
EstebanWhat did Simon Moro bring to the final version of the song this time around?
Simon and James took my simple blues riff and turned it into a beast.
EstebanDid the song turn out the way you originally imagined it? Was there anything in the production that surprised you when you heard the finished mix?
I thought it was a simple blues riff, but the band had a ball Jamming on it.
EstebanAfter thirty years of writing songs, do you feel that you're finally making the music you've always wanted to make?
Yeah, I keep improving! Can't wait for you to hear the third album.
