EstebanHola Jason, ¿cómo estás? ¡Es genial tenerte nuevamente con nosotros en la Revista Soundloop! Una vez más llegás con un lanzamiento muy especial, "Strong / Truce". ¿Qué te llevó a decidir publicar estas dos canciones juntas como un single doble A-side?
Tuve la idea a partir de la portada: poner juntas dos canciones esperanzadoras que hablan del dolor. ¡Esperaba que funcionara!
EstebanYa escribimos un artículo sobre los singles, pero a nuestros lectores les gustaría conocer tu perspectiva. ¿Qué historia o sentimientos hay detrás de estos dos lanzamientos?
"Strong" habla de seguir adelante después de mi divorcio, viviendo en un departamento pequeño, con un trabajo que odiaba y una mujer a la que quería, pero que quería algo más. Fue una época muy difícil.
"Truce" trata sobre intentar perdonar a las personas de mi vida por lo que hice con "Gown", pero todavía no puedo declarar una tregua.
Esteban¿Por qué creés que estas dos canciones funcionan particularmente bien juntas?
Las dos hablan de la esperanza en un lugar sin esperanza.
Esteban¿Recordás aquella época en la que empezaste a escribir "Strong"? Escribiste la canción mientras atravesabas las últimas etapas de tu divorcio. ¿Cómo influyó ese proceso en la letra?
Escribí esa canción después de ver a mi exesposa en Tinder. ¡Fue surrealista! Mi vida era un desastre y me estaba aferrando a lo poco que tenía. Fue una época muy difícil.
EstebanEn "Strong" hablás mucho del miedo y de sentirte paralizado. ¿Qué significaba para vos ser fuerte en aquel momento de tu vida?
Estoy muy orgulloso de lo fuerte que fui. Podría simplemente haberme rendido, pero seguí adelante. ¡La música me ayudó a superarlo!

¡Sí! En aquel entonces la música era un hobby, pero ahora es mi trabajo a tiempo completo. Ahora deseo desesperadamente que la música sea el trabajo de toda mi vida.
EstebanEn "Truce" decís que pudiste perdonar, pero que todavía no estabas listo para declarar una tregua. ¿Qué quedaba todavía sin resolver?
La gente simplemente se aprovechaba de mí en la Marina, en mi familia, y después me abandonaron cuando fui dado de baja por motivos médicos. Estaba luchando por mi cuenta, sin ayuda. Yo nunca abandonaría a nadie.
Esteban¿Sentís que finalmente alcanzaste esa tregua que la canción todavía estaba buscando?
Ni siquiera cerca, me temo. Estoy más solo que nunca en lo que respecta a amigos y familia, pero la música tiene que ser lo primero.
EstebanYa estás trabajando en tu tercer álbum. ¿Qué aprendiste de la grabación de tus álbumes anteriores —Pines Salad y Soliloquy— que te gustaría compartir?
Al grabar con un presupuesto limitado, tengo que estar preparado para entrar directamente al estudio y no estar con resaca. Necesito ser profesional y sacar lo mejor de mí mismo.

Reetoxa returns to Soundloop Magazine with a new release featuring two very special songs by Jason McKee: "Strong / Truce", taken from Soliloquy, the Australian musician's ambitious 26-track album.

EstebanHi Jason, how are you? It's great to have you back with us at Soundloop Magazine! You're joining us once again with a very special release, "Strong / Truce". What made you decide to release these two songs together as a double A-side single?
I had the idea from the cover, to put two hopeful songs that deal with pain together. I hoped it works!
EstebanWe've already written an article about the singles, but our readers would love to hear your perspective. What story or feelings are behind these two releases?
Strong was about moving on from my divorce, living in a small apartment, a job I hated and a woman I was fond of but she wanted more. It was a very hard time.
Truce is about trying to forgive people in my life for what I did with "Gown", but I just can't call a truce yet.
EstebanWhy do you think these two songs work particularly well together?
They both talk about hope in a hopeless place.
EstebanDo you remember that period when you started writing "Strong"? You wrote the song while going through the final stages of your divorce. How did that process influence the lyrics?
I wrote that song after seeing my ex-wife on Tinder! It was surreal! My life was a mess and I was clinging on! It was a hard time.
EstebanIn "Strong", you talk a lot about fear and feeling paralysed. What did being strong mean to you at that point in your life?
I'm so proud of how strong I was, I could have just given up but I hung in there! Music got me through!

Jason McKee — ReetoxaEstebanThe song keeps coming back to the idea of letting your feelings out. Do you think you've learned to express your emotions better through music?
Yeah! Music was a hobby then but now it's full time! I desperately want music to be my life's work now.
EstebanIn "Truce", you say that you were able to forgive, but you still weren't ready to call a truce. What was still left unresolved?
People were just using me in the navy, in my family, then they dumped me when I was medically discharged. I was fighting on my own with no help. I would never abandon people.
EstebanDo you feel that you've finally reached the truce that the song was still searching for?
Not even close, I'm afraid. I'm more alone than ever, friends- and family-wise, but music must come first.
EstebanYou're already working on your third album. What did you learn from recording your previous albums — Pines Salad and Soliloquy — that you'd like to share?
Recording on a budget, I have to be prepared to go straight into the studio and not be hung over! I need to be professional and get the best out of myself.
