From Iceland comes one of the most
promising voices in today’s independent soul and pop scene. Brynja Rán is
presenting her latest EP, Seven—a work that reveals not only her deep
artistic sensitivity as a songwriter, but also her striking vocal talent.
Raised between Iceland and Sweden, Brynja discovered music as a way to channel
emotions from an early age, influenced by artists such as Amy Winehouse, Lana
Del Rey, and Billie Eilish. In this interview, she shares her personal story,
the process behind her songs, and the challenges of being an emerging artist.
How was your first approach to
music? Is there any special memory from your childhood that marked you?
There isn’t really one specific memory from my childhood—I’ve been writing songs and singing for as long as I can remember. Music has always been something I naturally gravitated toward. I’ve always loved it and found a kind of peace in putting all my negativity, positivity, and creativity into something others might enjoy or relate to.
What impressed you most about your
favorite artists?
What impresses me most about my favorite artists is how brave they are. It takes so much courage to put yourself out there, knowing you’ll be judged. And yet, they stay true to themselves, unapologetically. That kind of honesty and fearlessness really inspires me.
What was the inspiration behind
“None Of You”?
None of You’ comes from a mix of personal experiences and stories I’ve witnessed in the lives of people around me. It’s about those unhealthy, co-dependent relationships—the kind where deep down, you know it’s not going to work, but emotionally, you’re still not ready to let go. There’s this tension between knowing the truth and not being able to act on it yet.
Your songs have very interesting
arrangements. What was it like recording and producing Seven? What
challenges or discoveries arose in that process?
Recording and producing SEVEN was definitely a learning experience. I wanted each track to have its own identity and tell its own story. Some arrangements came naturally, while others took a bit of trial and error to get right. One of the biggest lessons I learned was to trust my gut more creatively—sometimes the first idea really is the best one. Overall, it was a process of growth, and I’m proud of what came out of it.
How do you handle the expectations
and pressures of the musical world as an emerging artist? What problems did you
encounter in the emerging world today?
There’s definitely a lot of pressure in today’s music world, especially as an emerging artist. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others or feeling embarrassed and judged. For me, the hardest part has been—and still is—pushing myself out of my comfort zone and putting myself out there, even if it means risking criticism or being made fun of. But I’m slowly working on it, and I’m really lucky to have a strong support system around me. That makes a big difference.

¿Qué desafíos o descubrimientos surgieron en ese proceso?
Grabar y producir SEVEN fue definitivamente una experiencia de aprendizaje. Quería que cada canción tuviera su propia identidad y contara su propia historia. Algunos arreglos surgieron de forma natural, mientras que otros necesitaron prueba y error para encontrar la versión correcta. Una de las lecciones más grandes que aprendí fue confiar más en mi intuición creativa—a veces, la primera idea es realmente la mejor. En general, fue un proceso de crecimiento, y estoy orgullosa del resultado.

manejás las expectativas y presiones del mundo musical siendo una artista
emergente? ¿Qué problemas encontraste en el mundo emergente actual?
Definitivamente hay mucha presión en el mundo musical actual, especialmente siendo una artista emergente. Es muy fácil caer en la trampa de compararte con los demás o sentirte avergonzada y juzgada. Para mí, la parte más difícil ha sido—y todavía es—empujarme a salir de mi zona de confort y mostrarme al mundo, aunque eso signifique arriesgarme a recibir críticas o burlas. Pero estoy trabajando en eso poco a poco, y tengo la suerte de contar con un sistema de apoyo muy fuerte a mi alrededor. Eso marca una gran diferencia.
