Milton Batera: From the South of Brazil to Lisbon, a Life Shaped by Music

We spoke with Milton Batera, a Brazilian musician whose career has been marked by discipline, versatility, and a deep musical vocation. A drummer and multi-instrumentalist since childhood, he has performed in both marching bands and big bands. Batera has built a solid artistic path that took him from Brazil to Portugal, moving through stages, festivals, and internationally recognized collaborations.

Recorded in the country that inspired its creation, Presente Verdadeiro, his latest single, is a song shaped by the migrant experience, perseverance, and the search for meaning in the present. In this interview, Milton reflects on his origins, influences, creative processes, and the deeper meaning behind a single that also speaks to his artistic identity.

You come from a family deeply connected to music. What memories do you have of starting to play the drums at the age of seven?

I remember practicing with drumsticks on a phone list, attending VHS shows or vinyl records with my father, drummer.

 

You began composing at a very young age, around fifteen. Do you remember what motivated you when writing your first songs?

First, I wrote instrumental music, and a few years later, I wrote lyrics about love, thinking about situations I had recently experienced.

 


Your time in a marching band and a big band was also formative. How do those experiences influence your music today?

My experiences with marching bands and big bands have encouraged me to this day to practice the instruments I play constantly and with discipline.

 

Throughout your career you have worked as a drummer, guitarist, singer, composer, and producer. In which role do you feel most comfortable, and where do you feel you can express yourself most freely?

I enjoy all of these roles, but I have more experience with the drums.

 

You have performed in very different settings—Brazil, the United States, and Europe. What can you tell us about those experiences?

Every place I've played in the world has its own particularities, but what they all have in common is being able to see people enjoying good music. I like to see that there are still people interested in culture on this planet. And they go to shows ranging from jazz clubs to festivals.

 


What did moving from Brazil to Portugal mean to you, both personally and artistically?

In Portugal, I have achieved a lot with music, from concerts to having my songs played on the radio. This country has opened doors for me to other countries, and I have even managed to play with people who were references in my training, such as Randy Brecker, Janis Siegel, etc. In addition to having many more opportunities for personal growth than in Brazil.

 

You mention influences such as the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Bossa Nova, and Jazz. How do those artists and styles interact with your current music?

The influences I have influence my music, wanting to find what they found: the perfect melody and chords for what I want to express musically, as well as the right words for it.

 

Presente Verdadeiro was born directly from that change of country. How did the idea emerge that this experience needed to be transformed into a song? Was writing it a cathartic process for you?

It served as a testimony of what I wanted to find in another country, it was in a way a reflection of what I had experienced and a projection of the future! It was cathartic because it organized my mind and opened space for new ideas.

 


What does the concept of a “true present” represent in your life today?

The concept behind this song encourages me to keep doing what I love, without expecting anything for sure and knowing that because things were done from the heart, they will happen.

 

The recording process was very meticulous, even down to the choice of microphone. How important is technical detail to you?

I like to use the German Neumann microphone because it always makes all the difference in sound capture.

 

As a producer, what challenges did you face while recording Presente Verdadeiro? Do recording sessions always feel like new experiences to you, or do you tend to follow a working routine?

As a producer, it's always great to learn from the people involved, trying to encourage them to bring out the best of their talent.

 


In addition to your solo project, you are involved in projects such as BitSints and Diving Suits. What does working across different projects bring to you creatively?

Every project I'm part of has a little bit of me in it in various ways. I always try to leave my musical signature on each one from start to finish.

 

You have performed with internationally renowned musicians. What lessons did those collaborations leave you with?

From the international musicians I've played with, I've learned about recognition, humility, and music, above all else!

Estuvimos charlando con Milton Batera, un músico brasilero que tiene una trayectoria marcada por la disciplina, la versatilidad y una profunda vocación musical. Baterista y multiinstrumentista desde la infancia, ha tocado tanto en bandas de marcha como en big bands, Batera ha construido un recorrido sólido que lo llevó de Brasil a Portugal, pasando por escenarios, festivales y colaboraciones de alcance internacional.

En esta entrevista, Milton repasa sus orígenes, influencias, procesos creativos y el significado profundo detrás de un single que trata también sobre su identidad artística.

 

Vienes de una familia profundamente conectada con la música. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de haber comenzado a tocar la batería a los siete años?

Recuerdo practicar con baquetas en una lista telefónica, asistir a shows de VHS o discos de vinilo con mi padre, baterista.

 

Comenzaste a componer a una edad muy temprana, alrededor de los quince años. ¿Recuerdas qué te motivaba al escribir tus primeras canciones?

Primero escribía música instrumental y, algunos años después, empecé a escribir letras sobre el amor, pensando en situaciones que había vivido recientemente.

 

Tu paso por una banda de marcha y una big band también fue formativo. ¿Cómo influyen hoy esas experiencias en tu música?

Mis experiencias en bandas de marcha y big bands me han incentivado hasta el día de hoy a practicar constantemente y con disciplina los instrumentos que toco.

 

A lo largo de tu carrera has trabajado como baterista, guitarrista, cantante, compositor y productor. ¿En qué rol te sientes más cómodo y en cuál crees que puedes expresarte con mayor libertad?

Disfruto de todos esos roles, pero tengo más experiencia con la batería.

 

Has tocado en contextos muy distintos —Brasil, Estados Unidos y Europa—. ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre esas experiencias?

Cada lugar en el que he tocado en el mundo tiene sus propias particularidades, pero todos tienen en común poder ver a la gente disfrutando de buena música. Me gusta ver que todavía hay personas interesadas en la cultura en este planeta. Y asisten a conciertos que van desde clubes de jazz hasta festivales.

 

¿Qué significó para ti mudarte de Brasil a Portugal, tanto a nivel personal como artístico?

En Portugal he logrado mucho con la música, desde conciertos hasta que mis canciones suenen en la radio. Este país me abrió puertas hacia otros países e incluso me permitió tocar con personas que fueron referencias en mi formación, como Randy Brecker, Janis Siegel, entre otros. Además, me brindó muchas más oportunidades de crecimiento personal que en Brasil.

 

Mencionas influencias como The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, la bossa nova y el jazz. ¿Cómo interactúan esos artistas y estilos con tu música actual?

Las influencias que tengo influyen en mi música en el sentido de querer encontrar lo que ellos encontraron: la melodía y los acordes perfectos para lo que quiero expresar musicalmente, así como las palabras adecuadas para hacerlo.

 

Presente Verdadeiro nació directamente de ese cambio de país. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de que esa experiencia necesitaba transformarse en una canción? ¿Fue un proceso catártico escribirla?

Sirvió como un testimonio de lo que quería encontrar en otro país; fue, de alguna manera, un reflejo de lo que había vivido y una proyección hacia el futuro. Fue catártico porque ordenó mi mente y abrió espacio para nuevas ideas.

 

¿Qué representa hoy en tu vida el concepto de un “presente verdadero”?

El concepto detrás de esta canción me impulsa a seguir haciendo lo que amo, sin esperar nada con certeza y sabiendo que, como las cosas se hacen desde el corazón, van a suceder.

 

El proceso de grabación fue muy meticuloso, incluso en la elección del micrófono. ¿Qué tan importante es para ti el detalle técnico?

Me gusta usar el micrófono alemán Neumann porque siempre marca una gran diferencia en la captura del sonido.

 

Como productor, ¿qué desafíos enfrentaste al grabar Presente Verdadeiro? ¿Las sesiones de grabación siempre se sienten como experiencias nuevas o sueles seguir una rutina de trabajo?

Como productor, siempre es genial aprender de las personas involucradas, tratando de alentarlas a que saquen lo mejor de su talento.

 

Además de tu proyecto solista, participas en proyectos como BitSints y Diving Suits. ¿Qué te aporta creativamente trabajar en distintos proyectos?

Cada proyecto del que formo parte tiene un poco de mí de diferentes maneras. Siempre intento dejar mi firma musical en cada uno, de principio a fin.

 

Has tocado con músicos de renombre internacional. ¿Qué enseñanzas te dejaron esas colaboraciones?

De los músicos internacionales con los que he tocado aprendí sobre el reconocimiento, la humildad y, por sobre todo, sobre la música.
